Pierwszą bramkę jednak zdobyli przyjezdni. Początkowo mecz był wyrównany, prowadzenie się zmieniało. Lekką przewagę mieli jednak przybysze z Gdańska, Arka na chwilę objęła prowadzenie na 5:4 po rzucie Rafała Jamioła , ale para Adrian Kondratiuk – Krzysztof Komarzewski natychmiast zareagowała, przywracając poprzedni stan rzeczy. Goście zawsze byli o bramkę lub dwie z przodu, a Arka goniła wynik. Gra gospodarzy była prosta, opierała się na wypracowaniu pozycji rzutowej Robertowi Kamyszkowi i rzucie tego ostatniego na bramkę. Gdańszczanie grali bardziej urozmaicenie, co sprawiało, że trudniej było rozszyfrować ich poczynania. Doskonale rozgrywał wspomniany Kondratiuk, który także okazywał skutecznym egzekutorem. Gdy po 20 minutach znów na prowadzenie wyszli zawodnicy z Gdyni nadzieja wstąpiła w serca kibiców. Niestety, na krótko. W końcówce połowy trzykrotnie skarcił Arkę Kondratiuk, co dało jego zespołowi trzybramkową przewagę (13:16).
Mimo, że po przerwie pierwszą bramkę zdobyli miejscowi, to jednak zawodnicy Thomasa Orneborga pokazali większą dojrzałość i ponownie kontrolowali mecz. Udanie interweniował Artur Chmieliński, a szybkie ataki jego kolegów kończyły się powodzeniem. Przełomowym momentem spotkania było podwójne osłabienie gdańszczan, którego gospodarze nie potrafili wykorzystać. Zaraz potem przyjezdni odskoczyli na 5 trafień (19:24). Zawodnikom Dawida Nilssona udawało się czasami odbić 2-3 bramki, ale rywale natychmiast odpowiadali, utrzymując status quo.
Od 52 minuty gdańska maszynka do zdobywania bramek się jednak zacięła, w końcówce dodatkowo znakomicie spisywał się w bramce Maciej Pieńczewski i gdynianom udawało się odrabiać systematycznie gol po golu. Na minutę przed końcem Borys Brukwicki trafił i do wyrównania brakowało już tylko jednej bramki. Trener Nilsson wziął czas, by rozpisać ostatnia minutę gry. Wydaje się, że zawodnicy Arki popełnili błąd taktyczny, gdyż chcieli szybko zdobyć wyrównanie i powalczyć jeszcze o wygraną, zamiast rozegrać piłkę i przygotować pewną pozycję do rzutu w ostatnich sekundach, co mogło dać remis. Źle przygotowany rzut obronił Chmieliński, a Energa nie kwapiła się do szybkiego rozegrania akcji. Gdy piłkę odzyskali arkowcy do syreny zostało już tylko kilka sekund…
