Ponad 500 kolarzy z 8 krajów stanęło na starcie trzeciej edycji zawodów Gran Fondo Gdynia. Zawodnicy mieli do wyboru aż trzy trasy: Gran Fondo, Medio Fondo oraz Family Fondo.
Na ten dzień z utęsknieniem czekali wszyscy amatorzy szosowego ścigania. Po wielu miesiącach przerwy kolarze wreszcie mogli, ramię w ramię, rywalizować na malowniczej i pagórkowatej trasie po Kaszubach. Zawodnicy mieli do wyboru aż trzy dystanse: Family Fondo o długości 30 km, Medio Fondo – 77 km oraz najdłuższy Gran Fondo – 120 km.
Najwcześniej, już o godzinie 7:00 na trasę wyruszyli zawodnicy Gran Fondo. Przez pierwsze kilometry nie było zdecydowanego lidera, a na czoło wyścigu wysuwało się kilkoro kolarzy. Były próby ucieczek, ale żadna z nich nie zakończyła się powodzeniem. Dopiero w okolicach połowy wyścigu na atak zdecydowała się dwójka zawodników Karol Sładek oraz Dariusz Kołakowski, obaj z drużyny Spica Solutions. Szybko dołączył do nich Leszek Kusiowski (Bike U Up-TKJ Matuszewski) i w takim tercecie udało im się odjechać od peletonu. Na 80 kilometrze ucieczka miała 45 sekund przewagi nad grupą pościgową. Dobra współpraca i mocne zmiany pozwoliły uciekinierom utrzymać przewagę nad peletonem. Ostatecznie jako pierwszy finiszował Karol Sładek, który dojechał na metę z czasem 2:55:25. Na drugim miejscu dystans Gran Fondo ukończył Dariusz Kołakowski ze stratą 1 minuty i 12 sekund do zwycięzcy. Jako trzeci na mecie zameldował się Leszek Kusiowski z czasem 2:57:00.
– Poziom zawodników jadących w peletonie był bardzo wysoki – przyznał na mecie Sładek, zwycięzca Gran Fondo Gdynia. – Od samego początku próbowaliśmy atakować, by rozerwać peleton, by zrobiła się selekcja, ale na każdym podjeździe grupa się „zbijała”. Naprawdę sporo mocnych zawodników z całej Polski się zjechało. Dopiero około 60 kilometra udało się zrobić sensowną ucieczkę. Odjechałem razem z kolegą, z którym tydzień temu startowałem w Mistrzostwach Polski Masters, potem jeszcze jeden zawodnik do nas dołączył i tak udało się dojechać do mety. Trasa była bardzo fajnie zabezpieczona, super widoczki, były pagórki, które „wchodziły w nogi”. Była też wymagająca końcówka, na 110 kilometrze zaczynają się zjazdy, więc to co się tam wypracuje, to bardzo prawdopodobne, że do mety zostanie „dowiezione” .
Karol Sładek przed tygodniem był drugi w Mistrzostwach Polski Masters ulegając Dariuszowi Kołakowskiemu. W Gran Fondo obaj zawodnicy zamienili się miejscami.
W rywalizacji kobiet na dystansie Gran Fondo triumfowała Klaudia Gorąca, która dojechała do mety z czasem 3:37:00. Bardzo zacięta rywalizacja toczyła się do ostatnich metrów o drugie miejsce. Ostatecznie drugą pozycję z czasem 3:41:03, zajęła Bogumiła Chęcińska (Bradas Bike Adventure), która zaledwie o 1 sekundę wyprzedziła Magdalenę Kostrę (Polska Północna).
– Wyścig był fantastyczny, super zorganizowany, pogoda dopisała, po prostu rewelacja – powiedziała Gorąca, zwyciężczyni w kategorii kobiet. – Absolutnie się nie spodziewałam tak fantastycznego rezultatu, ale jechałam z bardzo fajnymi ludźmi, którzy dali mi ogromną moc. To była dla mnie zabawa, a przy okazji okazało się, że bardzo szczęśliwie dla mnie zakończona. Drugi raz startowałam w Gran Fondo, pierwszy raz był trzy lata temu, bardzo się więc cieszę, że zawody mogły ponownie się odbyć, po przerwie związanej z pandemią, która mocno, nam wszystkim, dała się we znaki. Moja przygoda z kolarstwem zaczęła się właśnie od Gran Fondo Gdynia, to był mój pierwszy wyścig, nie pamiętam, która byłam na macie, ale miałam sporą satysfakcję, że udało mi się ukończyć zawody. Jak więc widać przez te trzy lata zrobiłam ogromny progres. Jestem lekarką, a kolarstwo to rzecz, która daje mi ogromną frajdę, jest to moja pasja.
Nagroda specjalna ufundowana przez Red Bull, trafiła do Macieja Rogulskiego z Warszawy. Zwycięzca premii lotnej osiągnął najkrótszy czas przejazdu na ostatnim kilometrze trasy. Ten ostatni odcinek pokonał w niecałe 65 sekund. W nagrodę otrzymał co-drive z Jakubem Przygońskim, kierowcą rajdowym.
W sumie w Gran Fondo Gdynia wystartowało ponad pół tysiąca kolarzy, największą popularnością cieszył się dystans Medio Fondo, niewiele mniej osób zdecydowało się przejechać trasę Gran Fondo o długości 120 kilometrów.
– Cieszymy się bardzo, że wreszcie mogliśmy spotkać się z zawodnikami podczas Gran Fondo Gdynia – powiedział Łukasz Maleszewski, rzecznik prasowy Gran Fondo Gdynia. – Jesteśmy zadowoleni z frekwencji, ponad 500 kolarzy zdecydowało się wystartować w tej edycji zawodów. Pogoda dopisała i uczestnicy mogli bezpiecznie ścigać się po malowniczej i pagórkowatej trasie po Kaszubach. Liczymy na to, że podobne, jeśli nie większe emocje będą towarzyszyć kolarzom w stolicy Wielkopolski, podczas pierwszego Gran Fondo Poznań już 12 września .
Oprócz niedzielnych zmagań dorosłych, dzień wcześniej w Gran Fondo Kids ścigały się dzieci w wieku od 5 do 12 lat. Przez cały weekend sporo atrakcji czekało na wszystkich w miasteczku kolarskim. Było Bike Expo, gdzie można było zakupić sprzęt oraz akcesoria renomowanych marek kolarskich. Na odwiedzjących czekało też bezpłatne Mobilne Muzeum Rowerów z kultowym Wigry 3, Pelikanem czy eksponatami nawet z lat 20-tych XX wieku. Uczestnicy Gran Fondo po wysiłku związanym z przejechaniem trasy mogli też liczyć na smaczny i zdrowy posiłek regeneracyjny serwowany przez CityDiet.
