Koszykarki mistrza Polski, VBW Arki Gdynia poznały rywalki w Eurolidze kobiet. Gdyńskie zawodniczki trafiły do grupy „A” m.in. z tureckim Fenerbahce, rosyjskim Dynamo Kursk,czy francuskim LDLC ASVEL Feminin Lyon, czyli zespołami, z którymi rywalizowały również w ubiegłym sezonie.
Niestety, tylko w wyjazdowym spotkaniu z Francuzkami były lepsze. Pozostałe mecze przegrały. Będzie zatem okazja do rewanżu. W Gdyni pojawi się także Nadieżda Orenburg, której trenerem jest Maros Kovacik, selekcjoner reprezentacji Polski. Awans do następnej rundy rozgrywek uzyskają po cztery drużyny z każdej grupy. Pierwszy mecz Arki odbędzie się 14 października w Gdynia Arena, a rywalem będzie hiszpańska Perfumerias Avenida.
W nadchodzących rozgrywkach żółto-niebieskim przyjdzie się zatem mierzyć z drużynami, z którymi m.in. również walczyły w grupie w poprzednim sezonie. To właśnie z Dynamem Kursk na wyjeździe inaugurowały ubiegłoroczne rozgrywki, przegrywając 58:64. Natomiast o rewanżowym zwycięstwie Rosjanek w Gdyni przesądziła dogrywka po której było 92:86. Barbora Balintova miała wówczas w rękach piłkę meczową i… zgubiła ją.
Okazja rewanżu nadarzy się także w starciach z Fenerbahce, z którymi gdyńskie koszykarki przegrały dwukrotnie, 48:68 i 52:80. Lepiej było już z LDLC ASVEL Feminin Lyon, gdyż pierwszy mecz zakończył się wyjazdowym zwycięstwem 87:71, ale w Gdyni to Francuzki były lepsze 92:82.
Oprócz wymienionych drużyn rywalkami gdynianek w rozgrywkach grupowych będą: ZVVZ USK Praga (Czechy), i zwycięzca dwumeczu Aluinvent DVTK Miskolc (Węgry) – Izmit Belediyespor (Turcja).
Losowanie odbyło się w Monachium. Gdynianki były rozstawione w siódmym, przedostatnim koszyku. Do jednej grupy mogły trafić maksymalnie dwa zespoły z tego samego kraju.
Euroliga kobiet składa się z dwóch grup po osiem zespołów. Każdy w grupie zagra z każdym na zasadzie mecz i rewanż. Awans do fazy play-off wywalczą po cztery najlepsze drużyny z każdej grupy. Zespoły z miejsca 5-6 zagrają w EuroCup. Jeśli rozgrywki nie będą mogły wystartować w pierwotnym terminie, zostaną przeniesione na styczeń 2021 roku, a ich system zostanie przekształcony. Turniej Final Four planowany jest w terminie od 16 do 18 kwietnia 2021 roku.
Warto dodać, że jeśli rozgrywki zostaną przerwane z powodu pandemii, wyniki rozegranych meczów zostaną uznane, a system rozgrywek zostanie również zmieniony. Wszelkie szczegóły ma przestawić FIBA (Międzynarodowa Federacja Koszykówki) 1 września.
Dla gdyńskiej Arki będzie to drugi z rzędu sezon w Eurolidze. W poprzednim koszykarki mistrza Polski odpadły z rozgrywek po fazie grupowej, mając na koncie 3 zwycięstwa i 11 porażek. Wcześniej, jeszcze jako Polpharma VBW Clima czy Lotos Gdynia, w tych prestiżowych rozgrywkach zespół z Gdyni występował latach 1998-2010, dwukrotnie zdobywając ich wicemistrzostwo w sezonach 2002 i 2004.
Natomiast w EuroCup wystąpi PolskaStrefaInwestycji Enea Gorzów Wielkpolski. Koszykarki trafiły do grupy D z PBC MBA Moskwa (Rosja), KP Brno (Czechy) i Birevim Elazig il Ozel Idare (Turcja).
