Niejako w cieniu tej imprezy, o zasięgu światowym rozegrano drugą edycję kolarskiego wyścigu dla amatorów Gran Fondo Gdynia. Na starcie stanęło blisko 1200 kolarzy z 19 krajów.

Niedziela była kulminacją zarówno przygotowań do wyścigu od strony organizacyjnej, jak i sportowej. Punktualnie o godzinie 8:00 wystartowali śmiałkowie, którzy przez kolejne godziny mierzyli się z dystansami 80 km (Medio Fondo) i 134 km (Gran Fondo).

Gdy zawodniczki i zawodnicy w komplecie znajdowali się na trasie, rozpoczęły się wyścig Gran Fondo Kids. Najmłodsi adepci kolarstwa rywalizowali w czterech kategoriach wiekowych od 5 do 12 lat, a tym samym na czterech dystansach od 800 do 3200 metrów.

Przed upływem 2 godzin na mecie zameldował się pierwszy zawodnik dystansu Medio Fondo Mirosław Bieniasz. Wśród kobiet na tym dystansie triumfowała Agata Madej.

Zawodnicy, którzy przejechali 134 km rozegrali między sobą sprinterski finisz. Daniel Majkowski był o sekundę szybszy od Krzysztofa Paterki i to on został zwycięzcą Gran Fondo. Wyścig kobiecy zakończył się natomiast samotnym finiszem Moniki Szotowicz.

Dyrektor wyścigu Michał Drelich podsumował imprezę: – Mogę z dumą powiedzieć, że wyścig Gran Fondo Gdynia, został doceniony przez środowisko kolarskie. W tym roku odnotowaliśmy prawie czterokrotny wzrost liczby uczestników w stosunku do ubiegłorocznej edycji, co dobrze rokuje na przyszłość. Silna obecność zawodników z zagranicy upewnia nas, że rozwijamy się w dobrym kierunku.

W wyścigu Grand Fondo Gdynia wystąpili ambasadorowie tego wydarzenia: aktorzy Joanna Jabłczyńska oraz Jakub Wesołowski. Oboje wzięli też udział w akcji charytatywnej: „W 80 dni dookoła świata”, dzięki której udało się zebrać 8000 zł na leczenie chłopca z porażeniem mózgowym. Oprócz nich na trasie można było spotkać inne znane postaci ze świata filmu i sportu, jak: Beata Sadowska, aktor Piotr Zelt oraz lekkoatleta Piotr Długosielski.
