Dla Polaków był to mecz szczególny, bo rozgrywany w setną rocznicę odzyskania przez Polskę niepodległości. Z kolei kapitan Austriaków Daniel Oberkofler zapamiętał mecz w Gdańsku z racji rozgrywania meczu numer 100 w swojej reprezentacji.
Pierwsza tercja upłynęła pod znakiem bombardowania polskiej bramki, w której dwoił się i troił Przemysław Odrobny. Krótko przed przerwą biało –czerwoni musieli przetrzymać napór rywali grając 3 na 5. Golkiper Austriaków miał mniej pracy, o czym świadczy choćby statystyka strzałów: 9- 23.
Napór zespołu gości trwał także po zmianie stron. Znów co chwilę gorąco było przed polską bramką. Kevin Macierzynski i wspomniany Oberkofler zdołali pokonać Odrobnego i Austria prowadziła 2:0. Drużyna trenera Tomasza Valtonena próbowała rozmontować szyki obronne przeciwnika w trakcie gry w przewadze, jednak austriacki bramkarz nie dał się zaskoczyć.
W trzeciej tercji Polacy walczyli o kontaktową bramkę. Austriacy nadal testowali formę Odrobnego. Wynik 0:2 utrzymał się do końca.

W pierwszym niedzielnym meczu turnieju Norwegia uległa Danii 0:1 (0:0,0:0, 0:1).
Spotkanie było bardzo wyrównane, a gra toczyła się głównie w środkowej strefie. W pierwszej tercji optyczną przewagę mieli reprezentanci Danii, którzy stworzyli więcej groźnych sytuacji pod norweską bramką, a najbliżej zdobycia prowadzenia był w 17 minucie Mathias From, który przegrał jednak pojedynek sam na sam ze świetnie spisującym się bramkarzem Norwegii – Henrikiem Holmem.
Druga tercja była jeszcze bardziej wyrównana, obydwa zespoły pilnowały przede wszystkim dostępu do swojej bramki i w efekcie sytuacji bramkowych było jak na lekarstwo. Ponownie ze znakomitej strony pokazał się Holm, broniąc pojedynek oko w oko z Mortenem Poulsenem. Po dwóch tercjach na tablicy wyników nadal mieliśmy więc bezbramkowy remis.
Trzecia odsłona miała dwa oblicza – pierwsze fragmenty to przewaga hokeistów norweskich, którzy starali się wykorzystać kilkukrotną grę w przewadze, jednak w ostatnich dziesięciu minutach do głosu ponownie doszli Duńczycy. Decydująca o losach spotkania okazała się 36 minut – gdy obydwa zespoły grały w czteroosobowych składach sposób na Holma znalazł wreszcie Martin Hojbjerg.
Jednobramkowe prowadzenie hokeiści duńscy dowieźli do końca i cieszyli się ze zwycięstwa nad faworyzowaną Norwegią.
