– Jak to na pewno wygracie, jak to nie dopuszczacie myśli o porażce? Nie uważam, że przegrana Polaków jest niemożliwa. Wy mówicie, że musicie wygrać. A ja rozmawiam z Estończykami, i oni mówią to samo – oświadczył w dzień meczu Polska – Estonia były selekcjoner biało-czerwonych, Andrea Anastasi. Przed turniejem wydawało się, że pokonanie Estonii będzie dla drużyny Ferdinando De Giorgiego formalnością. Drużyna trenera Gheorghe Cretu przeciwko Finlandii i Serbii pokazała jednak, że nie przyjechała tutaj dać się trzy razy zbić i opowiadać potem o zbieraniu bezcennego doświadczenia. Dwie przegrane po tie-breaku kazały sądzić, że Polaków czekają walki na trudnym odcinku frontu. Zanim mecz się rozpoczął, pewne były co najmniej trzy rzeczy. Że Estończycy ten turniej i tak już wygrali. Do Gdańska przyjechało kilka tysięcy ich kibiców, którzy robili na trybunach kapitalną atmosferę, i o których liczebności i postawie mówili w szatni zawodnicy ich reprezentacji.
Drugim pewnikiem było to, że Polacy bez względu na wynik meczu zostają w turnieju. Trzecim – że nie zajmą pierwszego miejsca w grupie i w środę w Krakowie zagrają w barażu o ćwierćfinał. Od wyniku starcia z Estonią zależało, czy naszymi rywalami będą Słoweńcy czy Bułgarzy. De Giorgi zaczął mecz swoją żelazną w tym turnieju szóstką – z Fabianem Drzyzgą na rozegraniu i Dawidem Konarskim w ataku. W pierwszym secie żaden z nich nie błyszczał, a polski zespół działał tak, jak internet na trybunie prasowej z przerwami. Błyski i ciągłość gry nie były jednak konieczne. Tu as serwisowy Mateusza Bieńka, tam jego efektowna „czapa” na Ardo Kreeku, jeszcze gdzie indziej blok Bartłomieja Lemańskiego i set, który cały czas Polacy mieli pod kontrolą, zakończył się ich wygraną 25:21. W drugiej partii w polskiej drużynie nadal występowały przerwy w dostawie prądu, a De Giorgi postanowił zareagować na to zmianami. Stracił cierpliwość do niedokładnego Drzyzgi i nieskutecznego Konarskiego, w ich miejsce wysłał na boisko Grzegorza Łomacza i Łukasza Kaczmarka. Rezerwowe źródło zasilania też miało jednak problemy, żeby zaskoczyć, i w efekcie Polacy a to prowadzili dwoma, trzema punktami, a to pozwalali się dogonić.
Estończycy w końcówce objęli nawet prowadzenie 21:20, nerwowo było już do ostatniej piłki, ale wszystko dobrze się skończyło. Przy wyniku 25:24 dla naszej drużyny Bieniek zaserwował w okolice końcowej linii, sędzia pokazał aut, ale po wideoweryfikacji zmienił decyzję. A to oznaczało wygraną Polaków 26:24 i ich prowadzenie w meczu 2:0.
Skoki napięcia mieliśmy także w secie trzecim, tyle że tym razem czas trwania niższej i wyższej fazy, w takiej właśnie kolejności, wydłużył się. Początek to kilka prostych błędów Biało-Czerwonych i ich słaba, nieskuteczna gra w ataku. Estończycy potrafili to wykorzystać i wyszli na prowadzenie 11:7.
Na szczęście wtedy w polskiej drużynie coś się ruszyło, udało się uzyskać dobry rytm, po naszej stronie boiska w końcu widoczna była radość z grania i dobra energia, obecna przez większą część poprzedniego spotkania z Finlandią. Zobaczyliśmy kilka ofiarnych obron, kilka trudnych zagrywek Lemańskiego, jeden potworny blok najwyższego siatkarza w historii reprezentacji Polski, a wreszcie – remis na tablicy wyników.
Kiedy przy stanie 20:20 Polacy wygrali bardzo długą akcję, trybuny Ergo Areny ryknęły najgłośniej w tym turnieju. Chwilę później asa w linię końcową zagrał Lemański, a ogłuszający ryk rozniósł się po hali raz jeszcze. Z wyniku 22:20 nie mogliśmy już tego przegrać. Najpierw po skutecznym ataku pięścią w powietrzu zamachał Bieniek, potem Bartosz Kurek z wyskoku zza linii trzeciego metra zagrał do Michała Kubiaka, a kapitan dał swojej drużynie piłkę meczową. Pierwszą Estończycy obronili, przy drugiej Renee Teppan zaserwował w aut i spotkanie się zakończyło. Zwycięstwo dało nam drugie miejsce w grupie A i trochę łatwiejszego w teorii rywala w barażu – Słowenię.
Z aktualnymi wicemistrzami Europy zagramy w środę w Krakowie. Mamy z nimi do wyrównania rachunki sprzed dwóch lat – wtedy pokonaliśmy Słoweńców w grupie, by w ćwierćfinale po dramatycznym meczu przegrać 2:3. Wtedy w obu meczach na boisku iskrzyło, z tego powodu nasi siatkarze pewnie tym bardziej będą chcieli pokazać najbliższym przeciwnikom miejsce w szeregu.
Na półśrodki nie będzie już miejsca, bo turniej wkracza w fazę „nagłej śmierci” – kto przegra, wypada za burtę. A te mistrzostwa Europy są rejsem, który organizowaliśmy nie po to, żeby opuszczać pokład w połowie drogi.
