Na sopockim stadionie stanęły naprzeciw siebie drużyny miejscowego Ogniwa i obrońcy tytułu sprzed roku – RC Arka Gdynia. Tuż przed samym meczem nad Trójmiasto nadciągnęły czarne chmury, które sprowadziły m.in. na stadion im. Edwarda Hodury hektolitry deszczu. Dodając do tego maksymalnie przedłużony mecz Polaków na Euro 2016, frekwencja na trybunach chwilę przed pierwszym gwizdkiem wyglądała dramatycznie. Jednak po około kwadransie przez gąszcz chmur zaczęło przebijać się słońce, a widownię główną wypełnili kibice obu zespołów, którzy zgotowali na sopockim stadionie bardzo gorącą atmosferę.
Już w 1. minucie zapunktował Wojciech Piotrowicz, uzyskując trzy punkty z rzutu karnego. Niebawem tym samym odpowiedział Dawid Banaszek, po czym obaj łącznicy solidarnie spudłowali po jednym rzucie karnym. Śliska piłka i duża ilość wody na płycie boiska sprawiała duże problemy w rozegraniu akcji, w związku z czym w całym meczu zobaczyliśmy tylko jedno przyłożenie. Najpierw – w 33. minucie – kolejną „trójkę” zaliczył Banaszek, ale reakcja Ogniwa była kluczowa dla losów meczu. Piotrowicz z dużym wyczuciem wkopnął jajo w pole punktowe Arka, a jako pierwszy dopadł do niego Grzegorz Szczepański. Ogniwo wyszło na prowadzenie 10:6. Innym ważnym momentem dla losów meczu był groźnie wyglądający uraz Banaszka, który opuścił boisko z podejrzeniem wstrząśnienia mózgu.
W drugiej połowie królowała defensywa, jednak optyczną przewagę posiadali gospodarze. Jedyne punkty w tej części gry w 61. minucie zdobył jednak gracz gdynian, Tomasz Stępień, który trafił karnego. Ostatnie dwadzieścia minut było niezwykle emocjonujące, tym bardziej, że różnica punktowa była najmniejsza z możliwych. Ogniwu udawało się jednak utrzymywać grę na połowie Arki i to sopocianie byli bliżej zdobycia punktów. Gdy zabrzmiał ostatni gwizdek sędziego stadion wybuchł radością. Po długich trzynastu latach ponownie na piersiach zawodników Ogniwa Sopot zawisły brązowe krążki Mistrzostw Polski! Niedawni „Dominatorzy” zostali bez medalu.
