Uczestniczki i gości przywitała pomysłodawczyni imprezy i jej główna organizatorka Barbara Kowalska. Poinformowała, że Turniej BABA Cup otrzymał najwyższe odznaczenie PKOl. dla najlepszej najlepszej imprezy amatorskiej dla kobiet.
Małgorzata Szmajdzińska witając zawodniczki powiedziała, że BABA Cup to najdłużej istniejąca w Polsce amatorska impreza tenisowa. O randze tego turnieju świadczy choćby obecność w Gdyni wiceprezesa PZT Piotra Szkiełkowskiego, który „nigdy jeszcze nie był na babie”, jak stwierdziła posłanka, co sam pan prezes później prostował, że „nigdy nie był na BABIE Cup”!
Po oficjalnym otwarciu, którego dokonała posłanka Szmajdzińska uczestniczki odśpiewały pieśń turniejową.
W tegorocznym turnieju bierze udział prawie 150 tenisistek, które nigdy nie grały zawodniczo. Najmłodsza liczy sobie 35 lat (to dolna granica wieku dla uczestniczek), a najstarsza – 72 lata.
Pomysł turnieju zrodził się z tego że właścicielka kortów tenisowych w Warszawie i wypożyczalni sprzętu, Barbara Kowalska, była zawodniczka, mistrzyni i reprezentantka kraju, uczestniczka m.in. turnieju w Wimbledonie, chciała w jakiś sposób zintegrować środowisko tenisowe. Chciała przede wszystkim zapewnić rozrywkę kobietom, towarzyszącym swoim partnerom na kortach. W pierwszej edycji wzięło udział zaledwie kilka kobiet, ale kolejne już były dużymi wydarzeniami. Najwięcej – 256 uczestniczek wystąpiło podczas turnieju rozgrywanego we Wrocławiu.
Gdyński turniej jest rozgrywany w formule, pozwalającej na rozegranie każdej uczestniczce przynajmniej 3 gier. W sobotę od rana rozegrane zostanie ponad sto spotkań, a w niedzielę rozstrzygające gry i oczywiście finał. Przewidziano również turniej pocieszenia dla pań, które przegrają w meczach grupowych. Turniej t nie tylko sport, to także integracja środowiska. Po sobotnich grach przewidziany jest „babski wieczór” z męskim akcentem.
