Natalia Kuczys ma dopiero 12 lat, a już zaczyna być znana w żeglarskim światku. W dniach 22-27 lipca w niemieckim Travemuende odbyły się Mistrzostwa Świata w klasie Open BIC, w których zajęła trzecie miejsce i zdobyła brązowy medal. Długo prowadziła, kiedy warunki były trudne, kiedy mocno wiało, a nawet był przybój. Niestety pod koniec zawodów wiatr siadł, a jej zabraklo trochę doświadczenia i dała się wyprzedzić Japonce i Włoszce. Niemniej jednak za sukces poczytuje sobie wyprzedzenie ponad stu zawodniczek (kategoria U-13 była najliczniej obsadzoną).
Klasa Open BIC to łódka długa na 3,75 m, szeroka na 1,2 i niosąca 3,8 m kw. żagla. A właściwie to połączenie deski z łódką. Jest to klasa przygotowawcza zarówno do klas 29er i 49er, jak i do Laserów. Sprowadził ją do Polski dziadek dziewczynki, zasłużony trener żeglarstwa Andrzej Lutomski, podobnie zresztą jak wcześniej Optymista i Lasera. Obecnie myśli nad sprowadzeniem łódki podobnej klasy, ale dwuosobowej. Klasa Open BIC jest wiodąca w szkoleniu żeglarskim młodzieży głównie we Włoszech i w Hiszpanii oraz w Australii. Wyrabia cechy przydatne w wielu klasycznych, olimpijskich klasach żeglarskich.
Najbliższe Mistrzostwa Europy odbędą się właśnie we Włoszech na jeziorze Garda, a kolejne Mistrzostwa Świata, na przełomie 2015 i 2016 roku – w Australii.
